Here in Pennsylvania we had been able to avoid this disease until just recently:
CWD - is thought to be a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy
- is a prion (rogue protein (discovered in 1978))
- is a disease of mule and whitetail deer, elk and moose (cervids)
- discovered in 1967 (mule deer - Colorado)
- as the name suggests the diseased animals have chronic weight loss and die (always fatal)
- transfer is thought to be direct animal-to-animal contact or environment-to-animal exposure
- has not been found to be a threat to humans, livestock or domestic pets - that being said humans should not eat the meat of sick or CWD positive animals
